Last summer @YELPDC asked Sebastian and I to take over their IG account for their weekly Takeover Tuesday. Naturally, we said yes and spent a whole day featuring some of the top BBQ places in the district. Looking back it was one of the most fun days in our summer sixteen (*insert Drake voice*). This made me think "why not do it again?" so I glanced at the calendar and saw that Cinco de Mayo was approaching......perfect!
After chatting with the yelp team they loved our idea for a Extreme Taco Tuesday Takeover in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Time to see what DC has to offer.
So I have a bit of a confession, I think I am a yelp addict. Whenever I travel somewhere it is all about the food. Museums and tourist attractions are not my thing. I want to taste what the locals are eating and meet some fun people while doing it. The key to success, at least for me, is to spend a few days on yelp compiling a list of at least 10-15 places to grub at while exploring. Actually making the list and bringing it with you is important. Once you get to the first food spot show the bartender/waiter/waitress (I've had best luck sitting at the bar) the list and ask for their opinion and edits. Continue doing this until satisfied and trust me you will be satisfied!
Since Sebastian and I have lived in and out of the district my signature technique didn't need to be applied. We already knew of some amazing taco spots like Tortilla Cafe, Chupacabra and Mission to grab some fire tacos. The challenge we had was finding new or different spots that people don't know about. Yelp genuinely makes it easy for anyone to explore their local community and find those up-and-coming gems. My tip here would be to search by highest rated and look at as many pictures as you can. That's how we found Mezcalero, Gringos and Mariachis and JACO Juice and Taco Bar.
Hopefully you are keeping an eye out today on the @yelpdc IG page to see our takeover. Here are some bonus shots we captured during our taco tour!
