I find it difficult to stay put and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. For the most part, I prefer to stay on the move and explore with my camera whenever we travel. Breaking this innate rule is pretty hard for me, but when I do, I find that it’s a good thing to slow down and enjoy a moment of peace for a little while. My girlfriend (Jamie) and I have found the perfect place to relax and be care-free, it’s called Blue Diamond in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
This past visit would be our third time staying at the resort. We love this place for many reasons, but I think we keep coming back because of its incomparable relaxing atmosphere. Let me explain. Blue Diamond is a small, all-inclusive luxury resort located about an hour south of Cancun. In contrast to other hotels in the area, Blue Diamond only offers apartment style suites scattered across 36 acres of heavy mangroves and forest. Because the suites are clustered in small pockets along the eco-friendly property, you feel like you’re alone among the trees. There are only a total of 128 rooms, making this resort an excellent hideaway. Our room this last visit was located next to the lagoon, with its own private lap pool.
In addition to feeling like you are the only guests on the property, another factor that sets this boutique hotel apart from its competitors is the quality of the staff. From the moment you arrive, until the moment you leave, you feel catered to. It’s impressive how many things are done so that each guest feels at home. We really appreciate the warm welcome we receive from staff we have met during our previous encounters and getting to know them. Despite this being a five-star luxury resort, the staff creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere that always makes us feel right at home! A unique greeting is used by all staff at this resort. All workers place their right hand over their heart and greet you with a friendly smile every time they cross your path.
While we do enjoy our peace and quiet, we also like to take advantage of our vacation time. We typically get up a bit early and get breakfast around 9am daily. Right after, we either sit at the beach/pool or get ready for a planned activity. The resort offers a wide variety of included amenities. A few of our favorite activities are yoga, archery, snorkel, rifle range, wine tasting and cocktail class. A unique feature of this resort is the availability to the spa facilities to all guests. A few amenities include a full-service gym, sauna, steam room, experience rain shower and exterior heated pool.
Aside from the incomparable staff service Blue Diamond offers, our next favorite thing is the food. Most other resorts around the area offer buffet style food at their restaurants; while the food may taste good, it does not compare to the three a la carte restaurants at Blue Diamond! The three options include a beach front tapas bar, a formal restaurant by the lagoon for dinner, and a more casual option open all day overlooking the pool. The latter is our favorite! This last visit we were able to enjoy live shows and music over dinner offered MWF. The shows included a fire show, Mexican cultural night and a circus performance. This was an amenity not offered previously, but it’s a welcome addition to the experience at the resort. Dining is not restricted to the three restaurants. If you are so inclined, you may have your meal served poolside, to your cabana, or by the beach.
One of the least known features of this resort is the on-site temazcal ceremony. For clarity, Temazcal is an ancient Mayan cleansing ritual that involves a Shaman, red-hot volcanic rocks, and water with essential oils. This sweat lodge experience enables guests to shut off their mind and put forth their best intentions in life. The temazcal ceremony is a unique opportunity to step away from the grind, and just be present. While we love this ceremony, you must put your mind over your body. The entire experience lasts about an hour and a half, yet leaves you feeling cleansed and rejuvenated.
Despite having visited this resort several times over the last few years, we find it just as pleasurable, if not more, with each returning visit. This resort truly enables us to get away from the stresses of daily life, and enjoy a week of pure relaxation.
